Our appeal
Worldwide, 20 children under the age of five die every minute. The rate of mortality is particularly high in sub-Saharan Africa with hunger, poverty, AIDS and armed conflicts as the main causes. One in three Africans suffers from malnourishment, only half of the continent's population has access to healthcare.
With UNITED FOR AFRICA we - 23 German aid organisations - aim to give these people a platform to voice their concerns. Our goodwill ambassadors, TV presenter Anne Will and musicians and singer Wolfgang Niedecken as well as about 100 other celebrities support us in combating poverty and AIDS in Africa. The German President Christian Wulff has kindly agreed to accept the patronage of this initiative.
With the campaign UNITED FOR AFRICA we wish to
- illustrate the potential of Africa and its inhabitants and dispel the image of the "lost continent";
- create greater public awareness for the need to combat poverty globally;
- call upon politicians and society as a whole to engage in the fight against hunger and poverty in Africa;
- support the demands of the "Global Call to Action against Poverty": a substantial increase in development aid, the creation of a fair global trade system, debt cancellation for poor countries;
- help implement a fair political and economic framework, a prerequisite for sustainable development in Africa;
- draw attention to the many successful projects and examples of cooperation we have already implemented with our African partners. Donations do make a difference!
- Demonstrate that development cooperation has had and continues to have positive effects in Africa;
- raise money to fight one of the greatest catastrophes currently facing Africa: the AIDS pandemic, which particularly affects the poorer population. Each day, 6,000 people die of the disease in Africa alone.
